John, Our opinions diverge dramatically. For me, Joan differs from a snuff film only in that the actress survived; I keep wanting to submit the thing as evidence and have the director indicted. And the Marxist/anti-English ending is a slap in the face both intellectually and in tone. Methinks most of its reputation is due to having been made early rather than well.
Day of Wrath is a more interesting treatment of related themes and reflects Dreyer’s maturation. It’s better than Joan in my book.
Gertrude is enjoyable as a character study and, while the movie’s not in the same league, the protagonist reminds me of the daughter-in-law in Wild Strawberries.
Ordet is slow as molasses, more fun to analyze than to watch — and I wonder whether the puzzle’s worth the work. BTW, did Dreyer give his actors/actresses Quaaludes or just hobble them so they had to walk slowly? 🙂 Alan
