A polite reminder before reading this blog entry of mine π I will not tolerate any insults or negativity towards my subject of this post. This blog entry is strictly for dyed-in-the-wool Ava Gardner fans like myself or fans in general. So once again, please be kind π
This blog entry is dedicated to Classical Hollywood era actress Ava Gardner, who would have turned 101-years old back on December 24, 2023. Yes I am off by two months and two days (today is February 26th after all), but I could care less. That being said, I would like to wish a very Happy belated Birthday to Ava Gardner. As for the remainder of this blog entry, I would like to direct all of you dear readers to a blog entry I wrote at this time last year in 2023 about Ava Gardner. Ava Gardner! Gorgeous woman! Very earthy, unpretentious to a fault. The Killers is one of my favorite films and I love Hemingway’s short story even more. I think Ms. Gardner was a better actor than she thought she was, but her beauty eclipsed her talent.
I hear ya Pam π Want to hear something interesting? During the 1960’s, when she was trying to get away from George C. Scott, one incident left her badly beaten by him and she went back to Frank Sinatra, who was (surprisingly) more than happy to console her. He asked Ava, who gave her the beating and she said George C. Scott, but she did not want him to do anything cause she was scared of him. Sinatra took the bull by the horn and sent out a bunch of his men to make an example warning George C. Scott that If he abused her again, his body would not be found. Interesting isn’t it?
Well, it’s what I would expect. Sinatra was famously mobbed up.
To my knowledge he never beat Gardner, or any woman that I know of, but he was less than charitable to women. If he deemed you a bad woman, he felt like he could treat you anyway he wanted. Not an uncommon belief in his day, but still notable that he felt that way.
I am, however, surprised that George C. Scott would beat a woman. And secondly that he would have the nerve to beat the love of Sinatra’s life. He should have known better.
Pam, I am actually surprised you did not know that notorious alcoholic George C. Scott was a domestic abuser. According to the late gossip columist Liz Smith, she one time asked the late Colleen Dewhurst (when they were still married) what it was like being married to George C. Scott and she replied (at least I think I got this right) “fine actor, boozer, wife beater… what do you want to know?” I do not know If she was just being sarcastic, but to me, it does not look well on Scott’s part’ She and him divorced in 1972. A few years before George C. Scott’s death, he was sued for sexual harrassment by a woman who worked for him – click this link below and tell me what you think π

Interesting. Thanks. I didn’t know anything about George C. Scott’s private life. Wife beaters are the worst.
You are quite welcome Pam π
A nice tribute to the lovely Ava, John.
Best wishes, Pete.
singers have musch to owe to ava. during her seperation for sinatra, he became extremely jealous and went to africa to see her, only to dind hrt in the arms of clark gable. enraged and drunk, he returned to america where he was scheduled to record an album. he was in such a state that he couldnt sing, so the next day he snuck into the stufio and redid his vocals. this was in violation of all musician union laws, that stipulated that singers musrt sing live with the band, not overdub over existing tracks. but sinatral got away with it, and the result is soingers may now take as long as they want to record their vocals without havint he band playing behind them at all times. which would be very expensive, especially in the big band era.
Interesting bits of trivia there π I am aware of a lot of what you say here too π I hear ya, it would be fascinating to hear how Sinatra was able to get away with that without consequences (for lack of better word) π
Why thank you for the kind words Pete π I also agree with you that Ava Gardner was one of the many most gorgeous Classical Hollywood era actresses of her time π
Nice Ava remembrances. Sad George C. Scott remembrances. I know celebs are just folks, but they’re often in our lives for decades, if not our entire lives, we sort of “grow up” with some of them, and it sometimes feels like a personal disappointment when those bubbles are burst after we find out troubling or damning things. It’s silly–they’re strangers. But still… you know?
I echo your sentiments Stacey π
