  1. So many Carpenter classics to choose from. I always enjoy Assault on Precinct 13 with it’s nods to Rio Bravo. On the Assault on DVD commentary, Carpenter name-checks a few other influences, both from Hawks’ other films (To Have and Have Not, Hatari!) and other filmmakers – Night of the Living Dead . As Alex Cox noted “the film is a cultists dream!”

  2. You are right, their are so many Carpenter masterpieces. I have the Shout factory edition of Assault on Precinct 13. I know their are tons of special features, but I have to check If their is a commentary on that one cause I can’t remember. I love it that he mentions Hatari! because that is such an underrated Howard Hawks film. I second Alex Cox’s quote of Assault on Precinct 13 being a “cultists dream.” Speaking of Moviedrome, this was one of three Carpenter films he introduced on there. The other two are Halloween and Escape from New York 🙂 Anyway, thanks for dropping by 🙂

  3. Thanks for this list. I never realized he had such a breath of different types of movies.

  4. That he certainly does. You know which other director was like that? Howard Hawks (his idol). He could do screwball comedy (Bringing Up Baby), film noir (The Big Sleep), westerns (Rio Bravo) you name it. Speaking of which, Assault on Precinct 13 is in many ways a contemporary update of Rio Bravo. Anyway, thanks for dropping by 🙂

  5. “I’m going to watch Assault on Precinct 13 again in a few minutes. Perfect viewing for a warm August night.”

That it most certainly is 🙂 Anyway, thanks for dropping by Paul 🙂

  6. Yes The Thing top for sure. That film is too darn great. Loves it.
Then I wouldn’t know what t go for next!!!! At a push my top five “might” be!!!

    “The Thing”
    “Escape From New York”
***Damn it I can’t choice between “Assault On Precinct 13” and “They Live”
    “Big Trouble In Little China”
