Moviedrome Mondays: Diabolique (1955)

I have posted a youtube video link below to Moviedrome presenter Alex Cox’s introduction to French filmmaker Henri-Georges Clouzot’s classic 1955 psychological horror thriller Diabolique. Readers can also read Cox’s intro transcript here. The episode’s original airdate was June 29, 1992 (read here). Not much to add here except to say that I agree completely with all of the praise Cox showers on this true masterpiece of horror. If any of you readers are interested, here is a link to my favorite Henri-Georges Clouzot films (read here).

  1. Alex Cox nails the appeal of Les Diabloiques in one succinct sentence. “This is a real film, directed by a real film director.”

  2. Hi John,

THanks for posting this. It is very timely since TCM will be showing Diabolique next Sunday as part of TCM Imports!

  3. I totally agree with you Pete πŸ™‚ I also remember the nice reply you gave to my comment when I commented on your wonderful post πŸ™‚ Anyway, thanks for dropping by πŸ™‚

  4. “It’s just a shame I got the title of the film wrong! I must apologise for my atrocious typing.”

To Paul S: Actually you got the title correct πŸ™‚ Les Diaboliques is the French title, whereas in the US (and maybe your territory too) it was released under the name “Diabolique” πŸ™‚

  5. Another one I missed!
I assume everyone who loves it doesn’t mind reading French subtitles?
    Just curious…..

  6. Hi John, I’ve seen this film a couple of times, though not recently, and it is great. Pure Hitchcock with a French twist. I have a copy on DVD and should drag it out of the mothballs. πŸ™‚

  7. Diabolique is undoubtedly a great film John πŸ™‚ I read that Henri-Georges Clouzot was complimented when somebody compared him to Alfred Hitchcock πŸ™‚ Interesting isn’t it? πŸ™‚ Speaking of which, do you have the Criterion edition of the Diabolique on DVD? πŸ™‚ Anyway, thanks for dropping by πŸ™‚
