Welcome back my dear readers for my first Moviedrome Monday entry since 4 weeks ago. I am glad to be back though š I have posted a youtube video link below to Moviedrome presenter Alex Cox’s introduction to horror director Wes Craven’s 1991 satirical horror film The People Under the Stairs. Readers can also read Cox’s intro transcript here. The episode’s original airdate was July 3, 1994 (read here). While I still rank The Last House on the Left and A Nightmare on Elm Street as Craven’s two greatest films, The People Under the Stairs may be the film of his that I admire the most alongside New Nightmare and his first two Scream movies. Like Cox, I too revere social comment within the horror genre and his mentioning of the film’s protagonists makes me wonder what he thinks of African-American director/writer Jordan Peele’s two horror films so far, which in this case are Get Out and Us?

The People Under The Stairs is a good and solid horror film. The script is good and Wes Craven’s direction is excellent and effective. The cast are all good. The gothic house settig is well used. This film is slightly similar to The ‘Burbs. It’s a good film all round. Good intro by Alex too. I agree with what he says about the film.
It has an Arrow release.
I love the Twin Peaks connections but I was never a huge fan of this one. Welcome back!
It’s a watchable horror, but not one of the best.
Best wishes, Pete.
Welcome back! Sorry, I’m not into horror movies anymore.
Same here Steve š Then again, you probably knew that already though š Here in the states, not only does The People Under the Stairs have a Shout Factory release, but so does The ‘Burbs š
That is perfectly fine carlosnightman š Anyway, thanks for dropping by and I am happy to be back š
Well we may disagree there, but that is perfectly fine š Anyway, thanks for dropping by š
I am so sorry to hear that Cindy š¦ Either way, it is always great to hear from you and thanks for dropping by š
Welcome back John, sadly this another Moviedrome film I have no recollection of so I can’t offer any insight. I used to go out boozing most Sunday nights back in those days, this must have been one occasion when the VCR let me down!
Paul, you say you used to record Moviedrome. Do you still have any tapes with the intros by any chance? They could be uploaded to youtube.
Welcome back! Hubby and I have been quoting Fool for years. Or probably Ving Rhames dealing with Fool. It’s a nostalgic favorite of ours. š š
That is perfectly fine Paul š Anyway, thanks for dropping by š
Ving Rhames and Brandon Adams (who played Fool) were really good in that š Anyway, thanks for dropping by š
