Please note that their are 24 (or maybe more) Altman works (television or otherwise) that have yet to be discovered.
My top 3 would be 1) Gosford Park. 2) Short Cuts. 3) The Player.
(I have them all on DVD)
Best wishes, Pete.
The one I remember the most is Gosford Park, so I’m with Pete on that one 🙂
I dislike more Altman than I like, but the good ones are really good. Here are ten good ones. I could do without the rest.
Nashville (1975)
The Long Goodbye (1973)
California Split (1974)
3 Women (1977)
Images (1972)
Brewster McCloud (1970)
Short Cuts (1993)
That Cold Day in the Park (1969)
McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971)
Ready to Wear (1994)
As you probably know Pete – Short Cuts is my second favorite Altman as well 🙂
As you know June, Gosford Park is my 15th favorite Altman film 🙂
At the very least Bill, me and you can agree that Nashville is Robert Altman’s magnum opus 🙂
Nashville is very possibly the magnum opus of American film making in the 1970s. Im not an Altman hater, as my library includes =Thieves.Like.Us=A Wedding=3 Women=Gosford Park=McCabe and Mrs Miller=Nashville=Short Cuts=That Cold Day in the Park=Brewster McCloud=The Long Goodbye
=California Split=Popeye=Kansas City=Vincent and Theo=Countdowm=Images…its just that his films are so erratic in that their quality depends on much more than just his directing. For example, his directing on Health is on a par with his directing on Nashville, yet one film is one of the worlds best and the other is a dismal flop.
Hey Bill, sorry that your reply was not accepted two days ago. I do not know how this one did not show up and yet I accept comments from you all the time. WordPress can be occasionally strange huh 🙂 I am aware that you are not an Altman hater, but I understand that for you, there is more to a great film than just directing. As for HealtH, I was aware that 20th Century Fox had no faith in the film and shelved it – though it did play at certain art houses (at least I think) in 1982. Prior to his 1992 comeback The Player, Altman spent most of the 1980’s filming low-budget adaptations of small scaled plays. Though Tanner ’88 had was more expansive in scale (not an epic scale by any means), but expansive compared to his post-Popeye films of that decade.
i saw Health at the Seattle International film Festival. Altman brought his personal copy to screen and he talked about his disappointment with the non release. While from a directing point of view, it did not differ substantially, the casting was all wrong and the script weak.
Interestingly enough Bill (though you probably knew this already), your opinion is not all that different from the view of critics at the time regarding HealtH – one critic even implied that it is strictly for dyed-in-the-wool Altman fans and nobody else and given my love of everything he has ever done, I think that view is quite accurate.
