I saw The Killer in a double bill with Hard Boiled in the late-90s, and the majority of the cynical, hip audience laughed hysterically at the ending. I think they weren’t sure if it was meant ironically or as parody, rather than just as a really earnest piece of john Woo romanticism. The Killer is poetry and it makes me cry every single time.
